You’re Not Alone in This
About the Study
At our Stone Mountain research center, Dr. Maria E. Johnson and her team are studying a new treatment that may help lift the weight of bipolar depression. We’re looking for people who feel stuck in the fog of depression despite trying other treatment options.
Compensation & Transport
You’ll receive up to $1,500 total compensation for completing study visits. We also provide free round‑trip Uber transportation to all visits so you don’t need to drive or arrange a ride.
Who We’re Looking For
Adults 18–74 with bipolar I or II currently in a depressive episode lasting at least 4 weeks, especially if joy feels distant and motivation is hard. If you’re ready to try something different, we’d love to talk.
Could This Study Help You?
We’re Looking for People Who:
- Have bipolar I or bipolar II disorder
- Are currently in a depressive episode (lasting at least 4 weeks)
- Feel like nothing brings pleasure anymore (anhedonia)
- Are between 18–74 years old
- Want to try something different
You Know the Feeling:
- Exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix
- Emptiness where excitement used to be
- Effort it takes just to shower or make a meal
- Disconnect from people you love
- Frustration with treatments that haven’t worked well enough
This study is specifically designed to target these symptoms.
What Makes This Different
A research approach focused on bipolar depression symptoms like loss of pleasure and motivation
A Novel Approach to Bipolar Depression
About the Study Medication
Azetukalner is an investigational medication with a unique mechanism. Instead of targeting serotonin, it works on potassium channels in the brain that help neurons communicate. This approach is designed to address anhedonia — the loss of pleasure — and other core symptoms of bipolar depression.
Why This Matters
Many existing options can take weeks to help and may not address numbness and loss of pleasure. Earlier studies of azetukalner suggested meaningful improvements at the 20 mg dose being studied here. This trial focuses exclusively on bipolar I and II depression.
Different From Typical Antidepressants
Azetukalner works on potassium channels (tiny switches for brain-cell signaling), not serotonin.
Mechanism aims to reduce risk of triggering mania.
Targets Anhedonia
Addresses the numbness and emptiness where nothing feels enjoyable.
Participants reported music, food, and time with loved ones feeling meaningful again.
Close Monitoring & Safety
Generally well‑tolerated; the most common effects reported were mild dizziness and drowsiness that often improved.
You’ll have regular safety check‑ins.
Potential for Faster Relief
In earlier studies, some people improved within one week (not 4–6 weeks).
Individual results vary; this is still investigational.
